Good, bad and unexpected of Military life.

Oh India…. Why do I still serve you? (..Must read..)

Why do I still?

A beautiful poem on the frustration of an Indian soldier.

Why do I still serve you?1_guarding_boundary
How you play with us, did you ever see?
At seven, I had decided what I wanted to be;
I would serve you to the end,
All these boundaries I would defend.

Now you make me look like a fool,2_living-life-with-fashion-trends
When at seventeen and just out of school;
Went to the place where they made “men out of boys”
Lived a tough life …sacrificed a few joys…
In those days, I would see my “civilian” friends,
Living a life with the fashion trends;

Enjoying their so called “college days”3_sweat & blood in sun & haze
While I sweated and bled in the sun and haze…
But I never thought twice about what where or why
All I knew was when the time came,
I’d be ready to do or die.

At 21 and with my commission in hand,
Under the glory of the parade and the band,21_Premium-sacrifice
I took the oath to protect you over land, air or sea,
And make the supreme sacrifice when the need came to be.

I stood there with a sense of recognition,
But on that day I never had the premonition,
that when the time came to give me my due,5_army wife
You’d just say, “What is so great that you do?”
Long back you promised a well-to-do life;
And when I’m away, take care of my wife.

You came and saw the hardships I live through,
And I saw you make a note or two,
And I hoped you would realise the worth of me;6_death-looms
but now I know you’ll never be able to see,
Because you only see the glorified life of mine,
Did you see the place where death looms all the time?

Did you meet the man standing guard in the snow?
The name of his newborn he does not know…7_soldier-guarding-frontier
Did you meet the man whose father breathed his last?
While the sailor patrolled our seas so vast?

You still know I’ll not be the one to raise my voice
I will stand tall and protect you in Punjab Himachal and Thois.
But that’s just me you have in the sun and rain,8_some other track
For now at twenty-four, you make me think again;
About the decision I made, seven years back;
Should I have chosen another life, some other track?

Will I tell my son to follow my lead?
Will I tell my son, you’ll get all that you need?will-son-follow
This is the country you will serve
This country will give you all that you deserve?
I heard you tell the world “India is shining”
I told my men, that’s a reason for us to be smiling

This is the India you and I will defend!denfending-nation
But tell me how long will you be able to pretend?
You go on promise all that you may,
But it’s the souls of your own men you betray.

Did you read how some of our eminent citizens
Write about me and ridicule my very existence?2nd_live my life for one day
I ask you to please come and see what I do,
Come and have a look at what I go through

Live my life just for a day
Maybe you’ll have something else to say?
I will still risk my life without a sighIndian-Flag-Flying_last
To keep your flag flying high
but today I ask myself a question or two…

Oh India…. Why do I still serve you?

    Do you know how many of us civilians want to suicide because our ‘love’ left us.. do you know how many of are in depression because we lost our job… how many of us are complaining because we didn’t get to buy the iPhone…how many of us fight with our parents because they don’t let us do what we want to do.. do you how many of us have lost hope over India..and keep saying “is desh ka kuch nahin hoga” ? Do you know there are 100 other ways in which we insult you?

    Brilliantly put, Sonu, to echo what may be in the minds of some our finest! I can truly feel for them & salute them for all that they’ve done & continue to do; it’s a pity that those in their plush gaddis don’t. Kepp writing! God bless you, our jawaans and our country!

    This poem took a part of me. Being a military officers kid I know what it goes out there. I have seen it first hand. If this reaches to out civilian beuraucrats or politicians I request them not to test their patience or a day will soon come that no one will ever wish to serve this country anymore.

    I understand your pain and life story. But, you have made a choice. Live upto it. If you wanted something else, you should have changed your tracks. But, don’t say that lives of other people are easy. Civilians have their own struggles. Don’t forget, while you became a soldier, your family are still a part of the “civilians”.

      Abhishek that’s a nice way to show your gratitude. Giving life for the country is beyond duty. If you the common man doesn’t change nothing will.

      Look yourself into the mirror today and remember what u wrote I hope some part of you would still be alive if not god bless u then.

      He made a choice to serve the nation,to win to fight and die firghting. I am sure you know he has done it. he kept his words. The country made a promise to him and itself. The country made a choice to be an independent sovereign, for that you need him. Country cd have made a choice to be under either of the neighbours and many others interested,country cd have made a

        Choice of being better policed and ready for disasters natual and kalmadi made. What the country owes him is a little knowledge and understanding of him and his surroundings. What you and I owe him is respect and gratitude. The money and promotions are only superficial even though important.
        and no sir, I dont think his family as civilians. Can you imagine being away when your kid is born or when your old parents run around

      They also face the same struggle’s the civilians has to face…
      They are also aware of daily life problem.
      They know the life the have choose. The life which is truly exceptional..
      But does every civilian really cares about this country.
      All they ask us is ” Remember us’.

    Okay so here is some food for thought…. in another country, people who criticize the army might be jailed or executed (Pakistan for e.g.) but that is not India… so you are essentially protecting the right of the people to criticize/misunderstand you (amongst a host of all other things) without being in fear of retaliation… so dont be disheartened by that as freedom is not all bed of roses.

      Criticize your army? The very organisation to whom you owe your very existence? If it’s valid I agree. But most of the soldiers are doing a fantastic job keeping our frontiers secure, so that you and me can pursure our dreams. I cannot thank our armed forces enough. And it’s so interesting that you are talking about criticizing our true heroes.

    Very well written.. And to all, let the pride and honour of a soldier beacon him on the nature field. Let it not be his struggle when at peace. The nation vows it to him. A soldier requires recognition, of all others, mat be the most. For a simple reason, that if you choose to last down your life for the country, it’s a welcome respite to know that your loss will be remembered and sacrifice appreciated. Else why would they have the huge lines of medals on their chests, this one thing, the country is duty bound to shower on her soldiers.

    No cliché

    “Soldier” is always a soldier. He will keep up his word and promises. Will serve no matter whether gets recognized or not. At last, what he takes is the Pride and Honour.
    Jai Hind…!!
